I've noticed 2 things that almost all of these physique competitors have in common…


1. Almost all of them eat a LOT of protein. 

2. Almost all of them use carbohydrate “manipulation” as one of the main nutrition factors that they focus on to get seriously lean.  Carb manipulation means cycling carbs strategically on a daily or weekly basis.

First of all, carbs are not necessarily the enemy all the time. They can actually be your best fat burning friends – IF you use them strategically.

And, if you really want to control fat loss once and for all, it’s crucial for you to understand the pros and cons of carb intake. Trust me, it can be a love-hate relationship.

The Pros of Carbs

1.    Carbs are muscle sparing. In other words, they preserve and prevent the breakdown of lean metabolism-boosting muscle tissue.

2.    They provide energy to the brain and the body.

3.    They help spark our metabolism and keep it elevated to prevent metabolic slowdown and keep hormones in check.

4.    They stimulate insulin, which leads to a very anabolic/muscle building environment (this is kind of a catch 22 as you’ll read in a second).

The Cons of Carbs

1.    Carbs spike insulin levels and elevate blood sugar. It’s almost impossible to burn body fat in the presence of high insulin levels. (hence – the catch 22 above)

2.    Consuming too many carbs over lengthy periods of time can lead to a lot of fat spillover, which leads to excess fat storage. This can lean to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc.  Fat “spillover” means when liver and muscle glycogen stores are full, your body needs to store excess carbs as fat on the body.

3.    Carbs (especially processed carbs) are the most abused nutrient from both a health and fat loss perspective.

4.    Excess carb intake creates a lot of water retention, which leads to a soft look so it makes you look and feel bloated.

5.    Processed carbs hide nasty fillers and chemicals that can potentially lead to severe health challenges. We call these obesity additives.

6.    When if comes to grain-based carbs such as cereals, breads, pasta, etc, you also have the issue of “antinutrients” in grains.  Antinutrients are substances found in some of the highest concentrations in grain-based foods and prevent some mineral and vitamin absorption by the body, possibly causing deficiencies of nutrients if you have grains at too many meals.  Anti-nutrients and gluten in grains can also cause digestive system inflammation.

The intragastric balloon, filled with liquid and left in the stomach for up to six months, is not approved for use in the United States, though it’s available in Europe, South America and other parts of the world. Clinical trials required to win federal Food and Drug Administration approval are being initiated, but many Americans aren’t waiting.

Since the balloon’s introduction in Canada in 2006, people have been streaming north in growing numbers. Drawn by the relative ease of balloon placement, Americans account for nearly a third of patients undergoing the procedures in Canadian clinics just over the border.

But the balloon is a temporary measure.The intragastric balloon appeals to people who have a significant amount of weight to lose but are not heavy enough to qualify for bariatric surgery like gastric bypass surgery and adjustable gastric band surgery. The patient is anesthetized, and the balloon is inserted through the esophagus — a relatively noninvasive procedure. It is removed after six months or so.

The balloon may also be an option for extremely obese people who need to lose enough weight to be considered for more invasive procedures.

But just because the placement doesn’t involve surgery doesn’t mean it’s risk-free. Patients can suffer severe nausea and vomiting during the first few days or week after placement. On rare occasions, it can deflate and obstruct the intestines, or it can perforate the abdomen, which can be life-threatening.

Studies of the balloon have reported weight loss ranging from 13 to 34 pounds on average, with some individuals losing up to 50 pounds. Patients often gain weight again after the device is removed, though long-term studies are limited.

* 1 whole grain pocketless pita

* 1/4 cup tomato sauce

* 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese

* 1/4 cup diced red pepper

* 1/4 cup diced fresh mushrooms

* 3 oz. diced cooked chicken breast

* italian herbs to taste

Day Diet Plans
Depending on your body size, the quantities in this recipe may actually be enough for 2 servings. In a blender, mix together:

* 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (very low in sugar if you get the unsweetened variety)
* 1 cup coconut milk drink (if you can’t find the “coconut milk drink”, you can use 1/3 cup canned coconut milk with 2/3 cup water, since canned coconut milk is much thicker and creamier than “coconut milk drink”)
* 1 packet unsweetened frozen acai puree (you can find unsweetened acai frozen puree here or at many health food stores)
* A couple handfuls of frozen goji berries or other mixed berries (I’ve found frozen goji berries at Whole Foods stores… don’t use dried goji berries as they’ll make big chunks in your smoothie. * A small handful of frozen spinach
